The Lovers
Love flames to the brink of black
in this cosmic forge,
where the absence of light
is not void, but cogent, beyond
visible perceptions of you and me.
We could not choose but to embrace
secrets of ourselves we found in each other.
I will love you in this darkness of soul.
I will love you as time forgets to count.
I will love you when my substance frays
into the matter of all things
and you, forever counter-weight
of our mutual annihilation.
Merged, we burn
brighter than any new star:
Imaginable.
Written for Marian's Last Word: Imagine.
Also using another line suggested in Magaly's final Weekend Challenge: "I will love you in the darkness of soul"... for old time's sake.
Another part of my African Tarotscapes series of illustrated poems. All illustrations can be viewed on my art blog Nexus Card Design and for behind the scenes footage and storytelling, visit @nexuscarddesign on Instagram.
I see you!
ReplyDeleteOur Garden has been an exercise in imagination, none more than yours, Kerry. I will love you across the miles!
xoxo
I will love you out of Africa!
DeleteThanks for all your wisdom, support and for being one of the most caring and inspiring people I know.
‘Secrets of ourselves we found in each other’ sums up what these years of offering up and partaking of others’ poetry has meant to me. I have grown, questioned myself, reveled in reading amazing poetry, enjoyed meeting so many truly wonderful folks. Thank you Kerry. Farewell Garden.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much, Helen! And not farewell but au revoir. We shall meet again in another place.
DeleteWhat a wonderfully passionate thought
ReplyDeleteThank you, Jae.
Delete"I will love you" in all the ways. Wonderful, Kerry!
ReplyDeleteIn all the ways.. forever and a day.
DeleteBeautiful.
ReplyDeleteMerged, we burn
ReplyDeletebrighter than any new star
A beautiful love story, Kerry! You always have a way with words, Ma'am! This is a perfect response to the prompt
Hank
Thank you so much, Hank. Some days the words work with me, and I am grateful when they do.
DeleteIt is hard to imagine the dark being sooo dark but it is. I looked out my window just now, not a light to be seen, not even a star. I hear waves but I cannot see them. Those waves mean hope. This is a nice poem, a nice series. Makes one think.
ReplyDeleteSort of what I will be like and thinking when I go blind. Men in my family are very prone to macular degeneration around my age and older.
..
I don’t want to lose contact with you ~~~~~~
DeleteI so love your description in this comment, Jim. The visual sense is so predominant, but love surpasses it.
DeleteI'm thinking how we sit around a fire, watch it come to life, blaze, soften, then embers... then darkness. Sometimes the stars light the sky, other times on cloudy nights ... pitch black. The "embracing secrets of each other" works so well here and "I will love you when my substance frays
ReplyDeleteinto the matter of all things" for we are finite... yet our love certainly is not ... the ending is just gorgeous. :)
I am glad that this poem meant something to your, and you could read it from your own perspective. That has always been my intention in writing, to give the reader the opportunity to see a little bit of themselves in the narrative.
DeleteI have enjoyed your tarot series. Each one unique and your words enchant the reader.
ReplyDeleteHow kind of you to say. Thank you for following the series.
DeleteAnother powerful contribution to the deck, Kerry, maybe my favorite on both accounts (the poem and card). Fire in darkness burns brightest here, as a faith become truth: That is the steeliest of heart-stuff, and shows the measure of the singing, which is most powerful here. It can be mad and glad and infinitely sad at once. And the card, what more graceful pairing angelled by earthly wisdom. Well done Kerry.
ReplyDeleteThere is something archetypal and eternal about both words and image. I suppose that's natural, considering that we all love someone somewhere in our journey--yet, you are able to take that experience and carve it into a strong and graceful instrument, one that plays equally well for the novice as for the virtuoso who tunes it here on the page. I feel like it is one of those wave poems, where every line seems to crash louder and harder at our mental breakwaters, until everything floods in. I especially like the irony? vision? of the last few lines. Thank you, Kerry, for everything. It's been a privilege to share the Garden with you and all the others who made it the very best of ponds.
ReplyDeleteSince the giraffe is my favorite animal, I particularly like this card. A lovely poem from a most talented poet. You will be sorely missed.
ReplyDeleteTrue and beautiful love is a wonderful thing and Kerry you have written a poem that shows this to its fullest.
ReplyDeleteThere is power in a love this strong. Even the darkness respects its strength.
ReplyDeleteThe thought of the burning and giving light through annihilation is how I imagine the true nature of passion. The duality of being and dying... Great way to describe this from darkness.
