Child of mine, I cannot fathom
the endless beauty of your every
changing tide
but your thoughts I hear
like songs of whales – an echo
carried by the amniotic waves –
There is no ocean deep
as the farthest reaches of your mind
aswim with memories, gifted beyond gold.
No surf more opalescent than your eyes.
A watery 55 for Caitlin, on her 25th birthday.

Gorgeous and deephearted birthday poem, dotted perfectly with the rich image. A high five with my flukes.
ReplyDeleteAny whale poem is a nod to yours...

I just adore the opening, particularly the line break at "every":
ReplyDelete"Child of mine, I cannot fathom
the endless beauty of your every"
Also the one after "echo" ... Both I think make reference to mythology and creation goddesses.
ReplyDeleteI believe that every poem about motherhood must be ultimately about such creation goddesses.
DeleteAh, this is so heartwarming. A lovely birthday poem with a perfect closing, Kerry. :-)
ReplyDeleteLove the analogy of baby in womb and whale. They do come up for air.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful and Peaceful, loved.
ReplyDeleteThe deepest of loves that of a mother for a child. That is captured so eloquently here Kerry! I love love love this one!!!
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful poem for your daughter. Not a mother but I so love your love for your child. The drawn image of mermaid and whale together is wonderful.
ReplyDeleteSuch a beautiful birthday poem Kerry, truly awash with love.
ReplyDeleteI am certain that Caitlin is just as proud of you as you are of her.
Lovely!

Child of mine, I cannot fathom
ReplyDeletethe endless beauty of your every
changing tide

Beautiful poem for a lovely daughter. I'd like to pen such a one for my own!
ReplyDeleteKerry, you wrote a beautiful tribute to a well loved daughter. Mothers have keen insight and true observations, well perhaps stretched a bit sometimes. :-)
