Imprisoned in this Fortress of Dreams
I am the embodiment of smoke
on an inky skyline –
I am the thoughts the owl
speaks to itself –
I am a wolf’s cold stare
reflecting the glimmer of stars
a billion light-years away
a glint upon a frozen lake
a fractal heartbeat of midnight’s prey –
Wake me up!
Art FLASH! in October introduces the work of McMonster, a wizard of ink illustration.
An Ekphrasis poem in 55 words.
Some dreams are welcome some are not - this one seems like a good one to wish yourself awake from
ReplyDeleteAside from the unknown predators lurking...
DeleteThanks, Jae.
I really wasn't ready for that 'wake up' bid. It was lovely reading, a person I would like to have met.
ReplyDelete..
Thank you, Kerry, for our nice prompt. Your 'smoke on the skyline' reminded me of the driving picture that I posted here: https://jimmiehov6.blogspot.com/2009/03/one-single-impression-smoke.html?m=1
DeleteThank you again.
..
Thank you, Jim.
DeleteI am the thoughts the owl speaks to itself...what an amazing line. I like these 55s. It keeps the thoughts concise znd centered, just like the thoughts of the owl. Thank you for this art prompt. I liked it!
ReplyDeleteI am glad you enjoyed it Toni. I find the 55 forces me to get to the point, and make an impact if possible. I am happy to know this line worked. Thanks.
DeleteLove your interpretation of his creative art! And, when I have the chance to remember Galen, I gladly take it. I enjoy re-reading his posts. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteMany thanks, Helen. Always good memories to be had with Galen.
DeleteThis is exquisitely drawn, Kerry!❤️ I love; "I am a wolf’s cold stare reflecting the glimmer of stars a billion light-years away." Woww!❤️
ReplyDeleteThank you, Sanaa. I am pleased to know the line resonates.
DeleteI love this poem but my favorite line is 'a fractal heartbeat of midnight's prey.' Beautiful Kerry!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Linda.
DeleteHa! Wonderful ending! Sometimes the dream is too much! Thanks. k.
ReplyDeleteThank you for stopping by!
Delete"I am the thoughts the owl speaks" - Wow! Great line, and mysterious.
ReplyDeleteGlad to know you like it. Thanks.
DeleteOwls and wolves and stars - I love it!
ReplyDeleteCheers, Sherry!
DeleteOh... "the embodiment of smoke" giving form to something insubstantial. Creating shape out of nothingness. I love that image! The ending is fab!
ReplyDeleteI think we had similar thoughts here, the conundrum of voices talking from the night only to be saved by the daylight...
ReplyDeletethough maybe I will hope you can keep the owl and the wolf as company also after dawn.
The only way to escape a fortress of dreams is to be woken or to wake yourself up. It’s a chilling thought that maybe we could become trapped in dreams. I love everything about this poem, Kerry!
ReplyDeleteIn 55 words you really expressed the claustrophobia/ paranoia some dreams can inflict. Perfect!
ReplyDeleteThis drew me right in Kerry, to the fractal heartbeat!
