Bumblebee Planet

@skyloverpoetry

The bumblebee is already dead
for no apparent reason
curled in the foetal position
seemingly just resting
after a long dry millennium.

I carry it to my ear hoping
for a distant hum,
any sign from a distant galaxy somewhere
that a new planet has been born.

Everything stands in danger of extinction.
Even love.

  1. "Everything stands in danger of extinction. Even love." That little bumblebee speaks a very large truth, as we will find out if it goes extinct. I dont think we deserve another planet, after what humankind has done to this one. But Kerry, last night on the news, astronomers here in British Columbia have received radio signals from a planet a billion light years away. Far enough away they dont know how warped we are on planet earth.

    1. Wow! That's amazing.. hopefully the planet is too far away to ever cross paths with us.

  2. That little Bumbler breaks my heart. And your words "I carry it to my ear hoping for a distant hum" is so hopeful, like hearing the sea in a shell. Enjoyed it.

  3. I like the way a small creature like the bumblebee represents a whole planet and love, Kerry.

    1. In a way it does represent the planet.. bees are indicative of healthy biomes.

  4. "Planet" indeed -- your response to the challenge (which I read in reverse) so reminds me of an old gnostic saying from St. Thomas: "If you bring out what is inside you, what is inside you will save you. If you fail to bring out what is inside you, what is inside you will destroy you." Not saving the bumblebee dooms humanity. Holding that single bumblebee in the poem's palm -- our palm, for us to see -- (and with its almost prayerful sad curl into death) -- is a deep nail into the cross of our worldwide extinction. And yes, even love may be too late.

    1. Thank you for the quote.. something to mull over for sure. And, yes, all that is humane is in question, I fear.

  8. Poor bee. What so many in power fail to recognize is the interconnection of all life.
