Graphite on Paper

What does it mean that we move through seasons
untouched by everything that changes?
You are implacable, a mirror of self in my eyes.
Your voice is the fragrance of woodsmoke.
When the fabric of love was made to crumble
how do we find our way in the dark of each other?
The trees surrounding us on all sides may be bare
but the touch of mist, your touch, is indelible upon my soul.
Why is it that in the sky-brain of our existence,
we follow the path of the moon like graphite on paper?
I don’t know. I don’t know.
But yours is the mind I reach for,
mine the breast where you keep your heart.

  1. The first question you pose made me want/need to feel touched by each season no matter what it brings. Thank you.

    1. My point was that no matter the change of the season the connection between the partners remains the same but I see how your reading of the line is slightly different. i am glad it made you feel this way.

    1. I am glad to know that, Toni. I was uncertain if it carried the point home.

  4. How could we be so unfeeling as to move through the seasons untouched as each is a delight, relief or perhaps a warning that our lives are short. But what we need is to travel though life with someone so we are not alone as you state in your closing lines.

  5. It is impossible for me to ‘move through seasons untouched by everything that changes’. Sometimes I feel that if I ignored the seasons, nature would take me by the shoulders and shake me, take me by the hand and make me explore every little thing. These lines resonate with me especially:
‘The trees surrounding us on all sides may be bare
but the touch of mist, your touch, is indelible upon my soul’.

    1. I see my line is easily misconstrued.. oh, well.. we always read from our own experience. It is good to be in tune with the seasons but it is the changeability of them that I am refuting, when it comes to a relationship over the passage of time.

    1. Many thanks. Once one starts asking questions it is hard to stop.

  8. I can see how the mutual feelings between partners becomes a rail which to hold on to when everything changes around you... love the way you pose it as questions, which to me is the better way than handing out answers.

  9. Steadfast and true - I think of my marriage of almost 30 years (!!!) and how (in some ways) we haven't changed (in the important ways) and of course, in others we have. The ending lines are just delicious...
