And you wonder,
is this a message, finally, or just another day?
Eleanor Lerman
Life has a funny way
of revealing itself to you:
the closest star burns
its unwieldy light against your eyelids
and you commence with
the patterns of whatever peculiar
plot line is your own,
impelled towards
an imaginary conclusion
unreachable as it may be
but sometimes you remember
all stars are still shining during the daytime,
not only the sun,
and you let the sadness go.

A most positive affirmation ~~~ enjoy your weekend, Kerry.
ReplyDeleteI am glad that some positivity comes through, in what could be constured as a nihilistic approach to life.
DeleteThanks, Helen.
I love the reminder that stars are still shining during the day. Love your closing lines.......
ReplyDeleteIt was something I said to a new class of students, and it stuck in my mind as the basis of this poem, written as a very last minute thing on Friday afternoon. First week back at school is exhausting.
DeleteI often wish for that faith in the existence of what I can't see...this is just the right length, and your image of our march to the inevitable resonates, as does your title quote. Perhaps it's both?
ReplyDeleteFaith in the existence of what we can't see is the crux of this poem. Thank you for coming over to read, Joy.
DeleteHow the questions are better understood when we look sideways at what is writ -- I LOVE the thought of starlight writing oracles on our eyelids by day, when they are invisible to us. So much at work in the poem sources in such quiet orders.
ReplyDeleteTo be honest, this poem seems rather rushed and ineffectual to me, B but I do thank you for your insightful reading.
DeleteYour words are perfect Kerry and do not appear rushed or ineffectual at all.
ReplyDeleteI shall remember your closing lines whenever I feel a little down, a breath of (wonderful) fresh air that they are.

There is a sense of bleakness but, I found comfort in knowing the stars still shine in the daylight. To me the poem speaks about perception and sometimes we don't see that clearly. I could be off but, that is what speaks to me.
ReplyDeleteSo true - life reveals itself in its own way. Not always in the way we had hoped, but yes...sometimes we just have to let the sadness go.
ReplyDeleteGreat metaphor, which really makes the point.
ReplyDeleteA beautiful revelation.
