Did we mean anything to each other
the day before Earth swallowed Sun?
And did you say my name, either to curse
or pray, before Virgo Moon burned black?
Easier to forget if your hand reached out for mine
or had already let me go, now we have hidden
ourselves under these stranger, colder ashes.
A poem for the Virgo New Moon, 30 August 2019, and

All that is left is of course Hope when all other avenues have been searched.
ReplyDeleteHope is the greatest enemy of logic.
DeleteThis poem of longing and loss is beautiful and heartrending.
ReplyDeleteThere is such poignancy in the way you describe feelings of betrayal and hurt, Kerry! The image of "stranger, colder ashes," puts me in the mind of one who finally sees the other for what he truly is. Also, I just love your handwriting!💖💖
ReplyDeleteThank you, Sanaa. It is hard to understand, sometimes, how people who mean so much at one time in life can mean so little at another time. I think that is the thought behind this poem.
DeleteYour reply to S. Rizvi says it all. I'm reminded of the line from a Joni Mitchell song: "It seems such a shame; we start out so kind just to end so heartlessly."
ReplyDeleteThanks, Shay.
DeleteOnce the heart lets go, there is no turning back. I love this Kerry.
ReplyDeleteI can feel this, particularly the link to Virgo, oddly enough. Really I guess the only way is forward. At least for me
ReplyDeleteVirgo is a very practical moon to have, but also a bit Alice in Wonderlandish.. where the world is nothing but a pack of cards.
DeleteI think in the end we end up trying in vain to kindle a fire from ashes.
ReplyDeleteJesus, Kerry! Now I remember why you are the Power Punch Queen. Speaking those words soft as a sigh while gutting me open with the tragic reality of embers we can no longer bring ourselves to set ablaze.
ReplyDeleteBut it is your wordplay, the subtle but impactful vision your print on my the inside of my eyelids that haunt me in such an exhilarating way.
"Before Earth swallowed Sun"
I won't lie, Kerry. Envy is roaring through me on that one. Such a beautiful illustration of days transition.
But my absolute favorite:
"did you say my name, either to curse
or pray, before Virgo Moon burned black?"
There is desperation there. For anything, ANYTHING, but indifference, apathy, and numbness, but the cold sweeps a shivering reality through the relationship anyway.
Thank you, Kerry. For allowing me to sit and eat a savory dish from your table once again.
Please do me the honor of sending me your instagram handle. OT was kind enough to let me know I can find you there.
Such yearning and heartache is evident in this poem, Kerry. Outstanding.
